BMI CALCULATION

BODY MASS INDEX

The body mass index (BMI) calculated through the height and weight of the person is used to calculate obesity.

Altough body weight is the most important parameter of obesity, this value is derived by dividing body weight (kg) to the squared body height (cm) of a person and is a decisive factor in diagnosing obesity and determining its level.

BMI AND OBESITY

Obesity categorization according to the body mass index is as seen below.

VKİ
18,5 : Underweight
18,5 - 24,9 : Healthy
25 - 29,9 : Overweight
30 - 34,9 : 1st Degree Obesity
35 - 40 : 2nd Degree Obesity
> 40 : 3st Degree Obesity / Morbid Obesity
> 50 : Super Obesity
> 60 : Super super obesity
Note: - Gender, age and ethnic origin are not taken into account in BMI values.
BMI values are not valid for children and elderly patients.

WHICH CALCULATION METHODS CAN BE USED OTHER THAN BMI?

  • In addition to the body mass index, more detailed calculations can be used to determine percentages of muscle and fat in the body.
  • Waist circumference measurement can give an idea of where fat accumulation is concentrated. The waist circumference measured at the level of the belly should ideally be 80 cm for women and 94 cm for men.

  • Types of obesity according to fat accumulation:
    - Apple-shaped obesity: Fat accumulation occurs especially around the abdominal region and around the internal organs.
    - Pear-shaped obesity: Fat accumulation occurs especially around the hip region. The type of obesity with the highest health risk is apple-shaped obesity.
